Thirty years and more have passed since the lifeblood of the city walked away from everything they knew.
A city now frozen in time, with the thickening dust and the flaking paint to mark the passing of seasons otherwise unheeded. Once busy roads now given over to dead leaves and the rats - windows and doors left open to swing in the wind until the wood rots on rusted hinges.
These photographs are from the places in the “dead zone”, the ghost town of Famagusta that you can see into but not venture into. They are a poor reminder to many of what once was, and to those who never knew Varosi an incredible photographic essay on a town that is slipping away year by year while we are forced to stand and watch.
Famagusta still waits for some resolution to this insanity – for a return to the empty town that was once so familiar, hopefully whilst there are still some left who remember the places as they once were, bright and full of life.
Until then, images are all there is – on paper and in memory.
Both are fading.
